Innovative Mitsubishi Motors MiEV Technology – A "Joule" of an Idea

At the heart of every 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicle is the Japanese auto manufacturer's highly advanced MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative electric vehicle) EV-specific technology.

A paragon of advanced and forward-thinking automobile engineering, the three primary components of the i-MiEV's drivetrain are the electric motor, transmission and Motor Control Unit (MCU).

Tipping the scales at just 108 lbs., the electric motor that powers the Mitsubishi i-MiEV features a synchronous permanent magnetic motor that uses an advanced neodymium (neodymium-based magnets have proven to be the strongest type of permanent magnet for use in an electric motor powering an automobile). Power output is rated at 49 kW (66 bhp) between 3,000 and 6,000 rpm and 196 Nm (145 lb.-ft.) of instantaneous torque available at virtually any rpm.

Like the electric motor, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV's single fixed gear ratio transmission is remarkably compact and light (only 7 inches long and weighing less than 42 pounds!) and has been engineered to make the most of the electric motor's instantaneous and high torque output. Using a conventional differential, the electric motor/transmission route all of the available power exclusively to the vehicle's rear wheels.

Of note, the total weight of the electric motor/transmission combination is well under 150 lbs.

Playing a pivotal role in the 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV's drivetrain is the all-important Motor Control Unit (MCU). The MCU regulates and manages the electrical power supply to the electric motor to generate power/torque by converting the main drive lithium-ion battery pack's DC voltage into three-phase AC. Conversely, the MCU is also tasked with managing all of the electrical power produced by the vehicle's regenerative braking system and feeding it back into energy stored within the main drive lithium-ion battery pack.

Like the electric motor and the transmission, the MCU is also a compact and lightweight component (only 12.2 in. long, 11.3 in. wide, 6.7 in. tall and weighing 33 lbs.).

Positioned beneath the vehicle compartment is the i-MiEV's highly advanced main drive lithium-ion battery pack. Consisting of 88 individual battery cells, the main drive lithium-ion battery pack's total energy storage capacity is 16 kWh. Stored within a specially-designed protective stainless-steel encasement, the positioning of the main drive lithium-ion battery pack beneath the subfloor serves several important purposes:

  • Maximizing interior volume of the passenger compartment.
  • Lowering the vehicle's center of gravity for improved vehicle dynamics in such key areas as handling and stability.
  • Helping to protect battery integrity in the event of a collision.
  • Acting as an additional support structure that aids the vehicle's overall structural rigidity (stainless-steel battery pack encasement is bolted directly onto the chassis).

Thanks to its remarkably efficient MiEV-based electric motor and transmission, the 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV has an EPA-rated "fuel" mileage rating of 126 MPGe (mile-per-gallon equivalency) in city driving/99 MPGe on the highway/112 MPGe combined.

The EPA-rated "real world" driving range is 62 miles. The "real world" EPA driving evaluation test incorporates battery-sapping segments of aggressive driving and operating the vehicle in higher ambient temperatures with the car's air conditioning on.

The EPA has rated the vehicle's LA4 driving cycle range at 98 miles. In the EPA's LA4 driving cycle test, the vehicle is driven approximately 7.5 miles with numerous brief stops along the way; this more accurately mimics in-town driving with its accompanying stops/starts for traffic signals.

Avant-garde EV-specific Safety Technologies and Warranty

Every 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV model includes a vast array of safety features and technologies as part of this eco-friendly vehicle's standard equipment package. Among these items are a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS); an advanced six (6) air bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that includes dual-stage front air bags, driver and front-passenger seat-mounted side-impact air bags, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags; 4-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD); and Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control Logic (TCL).

Electric vehicle-specific safety technologies include Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) external audible alert system to warn pedestrians of the approaching EV; automated electrical disengagement of the electric drivetrain and main drive lithium-ion battery pack to protect the vehicle's occupants and paramedics/rescue personnel in the event of a collision; and having all high-voltage wiring and componentry positioned between the passenger compartment subfloor and the vehicle's exterior floors – there are no high-voltage wiring harnesses running through the vehicle's cabin.

What's more, a High Voltage Control System instantaneously shuts down the main drive lithium-ion battery pack's high-voltage circuitry if the system detects any battery pack leakage or failure (the most likely cause of such a battery failure would be a severe vehicle collision). And for an additional level of protection, a specially-designed supplemental G-force sensor will activate and shut down the main drive lithium-ion battery pack's high voltage circuit should the force of a collision be so severe that it damages the High Voltage Control System.

Additionally, Mitsubishi Motors innovative and patented RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) energy absorbing safety cell technology has been incorporated into the company's award-winning 100% electric-powered vehicle platform to help reduce injury to the i-MiEV's occupants. What's more, the i-MiEV's 16 kWh main drive lithium-ion battery pack is housed within a completely waterproof/dustproof and extremely sturdy stainless-steel safety cell to provide maximum protection to the battery pack as well as to the vehicle's occupants.

And for additional piece of mind, Mitsubishi Motors offers an outstanding fully-transferable 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty for the main drive lithium-ion battery pack and a 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain limited warranty.
