For the 2014 model year, Mitsubishi Motors' breakthrough 100% electric-powered production vehicle model – the Mitsubishi i-MiEV – not only receives a generous expansion of its standard equipment features but also receives a substantial price cut, making this eco-friendly and fun-to-drive runabout perhaps the most compelling mass-produced electric vehicle (EV) value in America today.
To date, more than 30,000 Mitsubishi i-MiEV and i-MiEV-based production vehicles have been sold around the globe. In such diverse markets as the U.S., Europe and Asia, the i-MiEV has proven to be a safe, convenient and utterly reliable eco-friendly form of personal transportation in any market in which it is sold.
The 2014 model year Mitsubishi i-MiEV ES model including DC quick charge port, battery warming system and heated side view mirrors now starts at only $22,995* – a substantial $6,130 price reduction from the previous generation. After factoring in the Federal tax credit of $7,500, the net MSRP of the 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV drops down to only $15,495**.
In fact, after factoring in the available EV federal tax credit of $7,500 and, for example, the California state EV financial incentive of up to $2,500***, (other generous financial incentives are available through numerous states and municipalities), residents in California can obtain the technologically-advanced 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV as low as $12,995.
What's more, the 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV boasts a much more comprehensive standard equipment package. Newly added as standard equipment at no charge to the consumer:
Driver and front passenger heated seats; CHAdeMO DC quick charge port; battery warming system; heated side view mirrors; rear speakers; 8A/12A switchable Level 1 charging cable; charge port lamp
Leather-covered steering wheel and shift knob; passenger-side vanity mirror with lid; numerous decorative color/trim upgrades
Aluminum wheels; front fog lights; new daytime running lights (DRL); black-out door sash trim
The 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV can be recharged using three distinct methods: a conventional 120 V Level 1 8A/12A portable charging cable that plugs into a standard wall outlet**** (estimated charge time from near empty to fully charged – approximately 22 hours for 8 amp/14 hours for 12 amp); a 240V/15A Level 2 charging system (estimated charge time - 7 hours); and through a CHAdeMO Level 3 DC quick charging station (estimated charge time to 80% full - less than 30 minutes).
Mitsubishi Motors' eco-friendly and attainably-priced electric vehicle is a paragon of efficiency: Its EPA-rated fuel economy is 126 city/99 highway/112 combined MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). What's more, the i-MiEV's "real world" EPA-rated driving range is 62 miles and a very robust 98 miles/charge in the EPA's LA4 driving cycle range.
Every 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV vehicle includes an 8-year/100,000 mile warranty for its advanced lithium-ion main drive battery pack.
Powered by Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV) technology, the rear-wheel drive Mitsubishi i-MiEV's drive system includes a 49 kW (66 bhp) AC synchronous electric motor; an 88 cell, 330V lithium-ion main drive battery pack for a peak storage of 16 kWh; and a single fixed reduction gear transmission. This electric motor is capable of producing its peak torque of 145 lb.-ft. almost instantaneously when accelerating from a standstill. The i-MiEV has a top speed of approximately 80 mph.
The 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV's shift selector allows the driver to choose between three drive settings to maximize driving efficiency and/or to increase energy recycling from the vehicle's regenerative braking system:
Allows maximum performance from the vehicle as it generates 100% torque in direct response to accelerator input
Helps to maximize energy usage ("fuel" economy) by slightly reducing overall power output to help reduce the rate of battery consumption
Increases the regenerative brake biasing to augment energy recycling (with 100% of power production available, same as in the "D" position)
Safety features included as standard on every 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV consist of a 6 air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) featuring advanced dual front air bags, side air bags and side curtain air bags; anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA); brake override system; Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control Logic (TCL); and specialized EV-related safety features including an Approaching Vehicle Audible System (AVAS) to help alert pedestrians to the approaching electric vehicle and a high-voltage power cut-off system.
Comfort and convenience features included on every Mitsubishi i-MiEV include a specially-designed highly energy-efficient HVAC system consisting of an electric manual air conditioner with micron filter and an electric compressor cabin heater; driver/front passenger heated seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; a 6 speaker 100-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3/WMA; auxiliary 12V DC power outlet; vehicle security system; power windows/mirrors/door locks; CHAdeMO DC quick charge port; heated side view mirrors; battery warming system; front fog lights; aluminum alloy wheels; and the very clever MiEV remote system that allows the lithium-ion main drive battery pack to be charged via timer as well as pre-activating either the air conditioning or heater.
The 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV may be compact in its overall dimensions, but this EV's clever packaging and design makes for very roomy and comfortable accommodations for four adult-size passengers. With its relatively tall roofline, rear-mounted electric motor and lithium-ion-ion main battery pack placed safely and securely in a watertight and dustproof stainless steel safety cell underneath the floor of the passenger compartment, even the rear passengers will experience an exceptionally satisfying degree of leg room. There's even a small cargo area at the back of the vehicle that is more than capable of carrying numerous bags of groceries or other items. And with the 50/50 rear seats folded flat, the cargo capacity expands greatly.
The 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV is available in four dynamic exterior colors: Labrador Black, Diamond White, Cool Silver and a new stunning Aqua Marine Blue.
